How Burgundy wine is classified
The Burgundy wine classification system – was created in 1936 by the INAO (Controlled Appellations Authority) and has 4 levels of quality:
- Grand Crus - 1.4% of total production and is the highest level of quality in Burgundy wines.
- Premiers Crus (1er Cru) - 10% of total production – the second highest level of quality.
- Village Appellations - 37% of total production – the third highest level of quality.
- Regional Appellations - 51% of total production - the entry level.
